Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, potentially. Eligible new residents who meet the more-than-183-day presence test each year can use the holiday without its special investment requirement. Renting does not remove the remaining eligibility, election or annual evidence requirements.

The historical 7% election belongs to the earlier framework, including eligible people who first became tax residents between 2020 and 2025. It is not the standard alternative for new residents entering the 2026 framework. Earlier residents should have their original election and any transitional rules reviewed separately.

Not automatically. Uruguay’s pension-income tax, IASS, excludes certain qualifying income originating from contributions to nonresident social-security institutions. That treatment is separate from the tax holiday. Private retirement products and investment withdrawals need their own assessment. Using a payment to support your retirement does not automatically make it pension income for tax purposes.

Additional analysis is needed. Attribution rules can bring certain income into your personal tax calculation before you receive a conventional distribution. Financial derivatives are also a separate category and are not automatically covered by this exemption.

A year in which you do not meet the necessary conditions can fall outside the exemption. Later compliance may restore coverage within the original period, but the clock does not pause or restart. Have your position reviewed before changing your travel pattern or selling an investment on which your eligibility depends.
